Kite Beach.
Recently I’ve been relishing spending my Saturdays at the fabulous Kite Beach.
When there’s enough wind, the kite surfers come out to play and make a fantastic spectacle with their colorful kites. It really is fun to watch them twisting and turning, and gliding in the air.
Kite surfing at Kite beach Dubai
If you fancy getting in the water for some watersports action of your own then you can rent paddleboards, kayaks, jet skis or even get a kite surf taster lesson (there’s a reason it’s called kite beach after all!)
The best ice cream and milkshakes:
As a self confessed ice cream lover and connoisseur, I was very excited to find the rolled ice cream stand. You can ask for mixed fruit or just one flavor. I went for mixed! The guy chops up fresh fruits, adds milk, smears it around a metal cold plate and chops it until it becomes ice cream! he then creates little mini rolls of fruity ice cream heaven. Magic!
Another cool ice cream and milkshake van is the inventing room van. Inspired by Charlie and the chocolate factory, they use liquid nitrogen to create enticing and creative frozen desserts and shakes.
SALT is one of the more famous food joints. It is renowned for its lotus ‘softies’ aka ice creams, and lotus milkshakes. When I heard lotus I assumed some sort of exotic flower, however it’s the caramelized biscuits you sometimes get with coffee.
Food & Drink?
There are plenty of eating options from simple food vans, to various burger joints to small outlets with outdoor seating, and restaurants with indoor and outdoor seating. My favourite is Operation Falafel for their amazing hummus.
Be aware: none of the premises are licensed so you won’t be able to have a cheeky vino or cocktail while watching the sunset.
Facilities:
Kite beach has basic but clean toilets and showers, although I think they could do with more toilets as on a weekend the queues can be long.
If you would like to rent a sun lounger there are areas you can do so for a few. One place charged 110 dirhams for a sun lounger, towel and umbrella.
If you’re a fitness fanatic, don’t worry. You can maintain your beach body as there’s an outdoor gym which you can pay to use. Be warned everyone will be checking you out (although I think that’s why most choose to use it who do!)
And if you fancy a game of volleyball there’s plenty of nets..
There is wheelchair access to the beach.
Dubai have made great strides in improving access to their sights for the disabled, and you will frequently see access signs for ‘people of determination’ around the UAE. This is such a positive step in the right direction to ensuring all citizens, residents and tourists can access the sights and facilities of the UAE.
Getting here:
Kite beach is located in the area Um Suqeim.
It is not on the Metro line.
It is easiest to access by car from Jumeirah beach road.
There is plenty of parking available. Make sure you pay for car parking, and check all signs nearby. You will be fined if parked incorrectly.
When to go?
The months of July and August may be too hot- they certainly are for my British blood. I prefer to go between October and May.
It is nice and quiet during the daytimes during weekdays and busy at weekends and evenings. During the evening, you will see a lot of people coming to job along the sea front. It’s a great place to people watch!
