Friday night brunch

When one of my work colleagues suggested doing a brunch this Friday and sent me a few suggestions, my curiosity was piqued by the Sparkling night brunch at Le Meridien.

Night brunches on a Friday are a bit of a rarity. Friday brunch is usually a daytime affair, and to be honest that is one of the reasons I don’t really enjoy doing them anymore. They take up an entire weekend- and I have more important things to do such as lounging around drinking coffee in bed!

Instead I have to get up and get ready. Dressing for brunch in Dubai takes a similar effort to what I imagine dressing up for the Oscars would be, people are glammed up to the max!

After four hours eating and drinking, heading to an after party, I’m in no fit state to do anything the next day and have no memory of what happened the previous day. The weekend is lost. However, by doing an evening brunch I could at least then have Friday to myself, and enjoy a few coffees in bed (the highlight of my week!)

The brunch started at 7pm and we got there about five minutes early and were seated outside which was very pleasant. The atmosphere was lovely and we got there in time to see the last of the sunset, with some music playing softly in the background.

The food & drink

At 7pm sharp we were asked for our drinks orders. I went for the sparkling wine and later switched to gin and tonics. The drinks were fairly standard, no cocktails unfortunately, but they had house wines, spirits and beers.

I was then straight up to get some food, as I hadn’t eaten much that day.

My first plate was filled with sushi, lobster and salad.

I was soon back up for freshly cooked fish at one of the stations, a mini fish and chips, a brie pie, a vegetarian red Thai curry, sweet potato salad and lobster! Yup I definitely got my money’s worth. In terms of food, I was very impressed with the choices available.

Service and atmosphere

The service throughout the evening was excellent, with a waiter regularly topping up drinks. We never had to try hard to get our next drink.

In terms of the atmosphere, it was definitely not a party brunch. It attracted a more erm, mature crowd- many of the people were aged in their sixties and seventies, and I swear the guy on the table next to us was in his nineties.

The entertainment was definitely aimed at a certain clientele.

Not sure what this was all about..

I joked that it was like being in Blackpool, not that I’ve ever been to Blackpool. But it had the English guy introducing the acts making terrible groan inducing jokes etc. There was a slight Phoenix nights vibe going on. Mind you, the doddery old guy on the table next to us was loving it!

Overall, I’d recommend the brunch for the older crowd who want a relaxing evening with plenty of food and drink!

At 11pm we finished our drinks and moved on to somewhere a bit more lively. Luckily the hotel is within walking distance from my favorite post brunch venue – beach bar Barasti, which is where I remained until the early hours!
