Dubai to Al Ain road trip
Dubai is the glitzy Emirate, the party capital of the UAE. But as fun as Dubai is, sometimes it’s good to get away. The UAE is a relatively small country at 83,600km2, and you can drive from one end to the other in a matter of hours. This weekend I and some friends chose to head off on a road trip from Dubai to Al Ain, a bordering Emirate South of Dubai and next to Oman. Al Ain is known locally as the green Emirate. So okay, it’s not exactly the green fields of England, but there’s definitely an increase in date trees and the like. As you arrive there is also noticeably far less traffic, and it’s home to more of an traditional, peaceful atmosphere. Buildings are mainly one or two storeys high unlike the skyscrapers of Dubai.
Getting there- the drive
Driving from Dubai to Al Ain is straightforward- we took the aptly named Al Ain Road and basically just kept going until we reached Al Ain. The journey took around one and a half to two hours. There’s fuel stations en route.
Where to stay:
We stayed in the reasonably priced Aloft hotel which is centrally located by the Hazza Bin Zayed football stadium. This hotel is modern and has everything you need. Rooms are well equipped with the basics, a comfy bed and a few extras such as Bliss toiletries.
It’s rooftop bar is a great place to hang out with an infinity pool overlooking the city with the mountains in the background.
There’s a shisha bar XYZ on the ground floor and a hotel restaurant, Olive Tree where breakfast is served. I opted for an a la carte option of pancakes and coffee.
Things to do:
Drive the winding roads up Jebel Hafeet mountain for incredible views… If you fancy getting active head to Wadi Adventure Park where you can partake in activities such as kayaking, zip-lining and climbing…
As we came in Ramadan we didn’t get to check out the local restaurants, and mainly stayed in the hotel which even during Ramadan daytime served alcohol and food at the rooftop bar.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my mini get away to Al Ain and will definitely return.
Where should be my next road trip in UAE? Any recommendations?
